I am blogging after a gap of good 8-9 months and it was a forwarded mail which made me write...
I got the following mail from one of my friends in Infy....
The mail goes like this -
This is update from my frnd in Cogni Chennai..
Plz read dis mail in a lighter vein..as a piece of humor..no offences to d natives of chennai..
Hi friends,
This is a live update from chennai.
Language - Tamil, tamil and tamil. Even if they know hindi, they dont speak up.
People - We never heard anyone laughing here (I wonder if they ever laugh or shout)
So conservative, that noone talks even in the bus
Food - Idly, sambhar, rice, dosa, vada, pongal
We have to cook our food ourselves (unbelievable naa).
Weather - summer from october to feb and rest of the year it's deadly summer.
Lesiure - TV, dormitery, dirty sea beaches on weekends
Rent - 6.5 K / 1 BHK
Advance - 6 months
Aata - Rs. 26 /kg
Apple - Rs 100 /kg
Orange - Rs. 10/piece
Banana - Rs 3 /piece
Mausmi Juice - Rs 18 /glass
Jeans Dryclean - Rs.40
Phulka - Rs. 8 (idly also Rs.8)
Interesting facts and incidents :
1. Here you cannot buy a needle after 6 PM (strange).
2. We asked an auto driver, "hindi aati hai"?. He replied in hindi "Hindi nahi aati".
3. The most common suffix here is 'a', e.g. straight - straighta 2 cup tea - 2 cupa tea
4. Even dogs eat curd rice.
5. In north, names are like Gori Shankar, gauri prasad etc. Here the names are like Kaliraj, kalicharan etc.
6. When there is a 't' in any name, they add 'h' to it. jayant - jayanth bharat - bharath
7. Here is a culture of adding mystical alphabets after ones's name, like Mahesh R, Sandeep T etc.
7. Cable connection is of no use here as only tamil channels are broadcasted on cable TV, if anyone wanna watch hindi channels then you need to buy a set up box (Rs.4000).
8. Cognizant navallur office is actually not in chennai, it comes under a district called Chengalpet which is 51 kms from main city.
9. Once we saw a girl in the food court, she was looking and acting like a north indian. My friend became exited and planned to talk to her, but just then we noticed her breakfast and then "dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye", she was having pongal. (disguise!!)
10. How dare anyone come to chennai : Cognizant Chennai MCity comes under SEZ(special economic zone), swap and transfers from here are not possible.
11. No life after 9 PM.
Bye Bye (waiting for banglore, pune, hyderabad update)
Life is not about cursing your posting location but it is about how soon you leave the company
Following is my reply....
Hi dude,
This is too much man... seems like this mail is written in bad taste and out of frustration.
I think the author of the mail needs to attend some cross cultural classes, I am sure Cognizant must be having such courses. If the person goes to US/Europe than s/he would readily adjust to there culture but not with a culture which is Indian....
And here are the replies....
Language - Common yaar we tend to speak in a language with which we are comfortable.... That’s the case with the people in Chennai.... and at times ppl don’t speak in Hindi ‘cas they don’t want to say something which is incorrect, (that was the case with few of my frds) and some dont know Hindi at all. But if you ask them for help they will definitely help you out (Of course few naughty elements are there and that’s the case with every place).
People - May be we North Indian's are so used to hooliganism that we can’t tolerate people in bus being silent :-) Even in Infy buses in Hyderabad people hardly speak. (Exceptions –Sudarshan, Amar, Rahul n me, if any two of us are there).
Food - Either one should accept and enjoy the food which is readily available or cook him/herself and there is nothing wrong in cooking yourself. And there are plenty of eateries in Chennai which provide all kinds of food and one just needs to search.
Weather - About weather common man its nothing to crib about. Enjoy the lovely evening sea breeze.
Lesiure - I know Chandigarh is the cleanest city in India but not every city is like that, though it shd be.
Rent - Is Hyderabad, B'lore, Mumbai cheap? For rents going northwards other people blame the IT junta only… I know places in Chennai where 2 bedroom flat costs Rs1500 will s/he stay in those places... Not possible yaar…
Advance - In B’lore n Bombay one ends up paying 10 months advance....
Regarding price of goods I don’t have much clue but when I was in Hyd, apple used to cost us Rs. 12 per piece. And there was a lot of hue and cry abt prices of potato, onion and tomato recently…. In fact congress lost elections in two states 'cas of price rise....
But am sure there must be places where one can get these things at a cheaper rate.
1. I have no clue about needle, but one could have tried in a different shop.
2. Well generally the autowalas are bad, you ask any Chennaite s/he will vouch for it... But the person might be knowing only that much Hindi.
3. Well we also say a lot of things which might sound funny to others... (So wats the big deal with ‘a’).
4. Thats derogatory... Not worth replying...
5, 6, 7. There are some cultural issues involved with everything so one must be sensitive to it… N must accept and respect the ones name is written... The ‘R’ or ‘T’ is the initial and is the name of the person’s father, hence it is written that way..
7 (Should have been 8 but the author wrote '7'). Cable even south Delhi and south Mumbai have now implemented CAS and soon other major cities will follow.... So no point complaining dude…. If one wants to see all the channels get the set top box.
8. Well all IT offices are located outside the city... The case in point is most of the offices in Blore, Hyd, Pune. Where is the space in the city to expand.
9. Common yaar I have no words for it... u sound desperate....
10. U know a lot of my friends r not able to go to Chennai 'cas of this...
11. Well the person shd go to right places if he wants to enjoy night life.... There are plenty of places in Chennai...
Instead of complaining and cribbing one must accept the way things are and live happily or should move on... But learn to respect other cultures... that’s very important.
This is just to show the right picture and not to hurt anyone....
Sorry if I have been rude. But couldn’t control it.

Haha! Good one there!! Well, I completely agree abt the cost of living in "Namma Chennai"...its quite high ya...some things are still very very premiumly priced!!!
Abt the way we spell our names, yep, had I been a Northie, I wuld have been Kavita, the reason behind the 'h' attached to our 't's is coz we Southies pronounce 'ta' as in Tata...its alwaaays been a confusion for my poor friends/colleagues from the North! :)
